Masked Monsters

Masked Monsters

Every member of the State House and half the members of the State Senate are up for reelection this year. Maybe they’re out knocking doors right now, wearing the masks that get them elected year after year: Friendly real estate agent. Friendly banker. Friendly insurance salesman. That friendly guy from Rotary. That friendly neighbor from down the street.

The masks are dangerous because they’re disarming. It’s hard to imagine that these nice people would ask for your vote and then go to Nashville and vote to hurt you or someone you love. But that’s what many of them do.

They’ll be courteous. They’ll take your phone call. They’ll look you in the eye and listen to your concerns.

But in the end they’ll vote in lockstep to satisfy lobbyists, deep-pocketed donors, or their personal biases, theories, or religious ideologies.

That friendly Realtor will vote to hand your hard-earned tax dollars to wealthy corporations out of state.

That friendly banker will vote for private-school vouchers that defund your son’s neighborhood school.

That friendly insurance salesman will vote to turn away federal funds that could have helped your husband get medical care he desperately needs.

That friendly guy from Rotary will vote to make it easier for an unstable person to shoot up your grandchild’s classroom.

That friendly neighbor will vote to force your pregnant 12-year-old to carry to term.

The biggest problem we face in Tennessee is the harm being done to Tennesseans by their harmless-looking representatives. Let’s get our friends and neighbors to see behind the masks, and then get them to the polls.
